Abstract

To assess the effects of age and obesity on cardiac function, we analyzed two-dimensional, M-mode, and Doppler echocardiograms of 460 normal subjects (male: 247, female: 213). Ideal weight was defined as the weight corresponded tobody mass index 22. Over weight was defined as the difference between actual weight and ideal weight.
Left ventricular mass increased with overweight. Stroke volume increased with over weight in female. Ejection fraction increased with age. The A/E ratio of mitral and tricuspid flow increased with age and body mass index.
The results suggested that some indices of cardiac function changed with age and obesity in normal subjects.
