A series of experiments were conducted to investigate the basic mechanical properties of welded joints by SBHS500 with a thickness of 86 mm. No cracks or defects were observed in the joints fabricated by 68 gas metal arc welding passes. Extreme hardening or softening did not occur in the heat-affected zone. The joints achieved sufficient tensile strength and bending performance. Charpy impact test specimens were extracted from different positions in the thickness direction. Although the Charpy absorbed energy was over 47 J at the test temperature of −5 ℃, no relationship was confirmed between the absorbed energy and the positions in the thickness direction or the magnitude of heat input.
