Abstract
Objective: The purpose of this study was to assess current issues on complications related to gastrointestinal stoma construction. We reviewed the frequency, types, and causes of complications from the published literature.
Results: The frequency of stoma-related complications greatly differed among studies and ranged from 10 to 70％. Frequently reported complications included peristomal dermatitis, prolapse, and parastomal hernia. Although the causes of complications can be attributed to the construction method and postoperative care, details were scarce because complications could not be pinned on one cause. Yet, the complications were considered independent of patient comorbidities.
Conclusion: ln order to gain a better understanding of current issues on stoma complications, more focus needs to be placed on construction methods and the duration of observation periods. Moreover, the guidance of specialized staff prior to stoma construction allows for the prevention and avoidance of complications.
