Abstract
Six villages, towns, and cities in the Tsumari region of Niigata Ptefecture struggle with the problem of depopulation. They are beginning to utilize art to counter this problem. In this region, one result of the slow rate of economic development is that farming village scenery and a great deal of nature remains. Enrichment of the region is being attempted through linking these possessions with art. A new project with a strong public emphasis has bcen begun, This work is an attempt to examine the cultulal aspects of Echigo Tsumaris "Art Necklace Constnlction."
