Abstract
As for Makuhari-cho, the east abuts Tokyo Bay and the west faces inland. Historically fisheries and agriculture prospered together, and the town supplied food to Tokyo. Things changed dramatically in the 1970's. Chiba prefecture reclaimed land from Tokyo Bay adjacent to Makuhari-cho, and constructed Makuhari New City. This research examined utilization and evaluation of urban functions in MAKUHARI New City, based on the questionnaires to inhabitants in Makuhari-cho. Then authors indicated that 1) An old regional culture and identity in Makuhari-cho had been disappearing for 1Oyeas, because of being reclaimed land.2) At first, Inhabitants in Makuhari-cho were not making use of Makuhari New City. At present, they make use of it in their daily life. But they have not gotten another regional culture and identity from Makuhari New City yet.
