Abstract

In hospital, it is difficult for patients to fully understand the contents of the treatment or test they receive just from the doctor's explanation, and they often agree to the treatment or test with an ambiguous understanding. In this study, in cooperation with Tokai University Hospital, we redesigned the materials used in the explanations of tests conducted in the Department of Clinical Genetics at our university and verified their effectiveness. Conventional materials were made by doctors themselves, but the redesigned materials show the contents of the explanation graphically on one page, allowing patients to have a bird's-eye view of the explanation.

;In the past, physicians had seen overlapping explanations, but by using the redesigned materials, we observed an improvement in this situation.

;A design that provides a bird's-eye view of the entire explanation would allow patients to actively understand the content of their consent and build a mutual understanding between the doctor and patient, thereby contributing to medical safety.
