The authors propose a new mockup technology that can evaluate usability at the upstream stage of design where basic shapes of a product should be conceived and examined. By approximating a product shape with a wire mesh structure, three-dimensional motions of hands and fingers that grasp and operate the shape with bare hands can be motion-captured with an infrared camera. Invisibility can also be achieved by inserting a filter that transmits infrared rays but not visible light into the mockup of the mesh.
