Abstract

The pictograms produced by Rudolf Modley in the 1930s include many pictograms representing actions and gestures far from strict ones. This study aims to re-evaluate these pictograms as representing the diversity of pre-standard pictograms. Focusing on the attempted expansion of the pictogram domain into cartoons as a factor in the diversity of pictograms, the paper argued that from around 1938, Modley expanded from pictorial statistics to the field of cartoons via pictorial diagrams, and skillful designers such as Karl Keller were involved in the design of the cartoon. Based on these findings, the paper summarized the need to reanalyze the relationship between the content in which pictograms are used and their design.
