International students from the Design Department of the Tokyo Higher Technical School who became the pioneer of modern Chinese design instructors

A study on the careers of Xu Jin, Ding Naigang and Huang Rui

Abstract

This study is based on our previously established statistics of Chinese students at Tokyo Higher Technical School (1899-1914). We have selected three representative figures from the list of Chinese students: Xu Jin, Ding Naigang and Huang Rui. After their graduation and return to China, they became the earliest instructors of design disciplines in modern China with a great deal of work in the printing and plate-making industry. This study focuses on describing their post-graduation careers.
