Material Tinkering: Exploration of Designerly Knowledge in the early stage of design process

Abstract

This paper proposes material tinkering as a means to explore opportunities through "co-creation" between designers and materials in the warly stage of design process.

It is an act of generating "designerly knowledge" through the designer's independent exploration for material properties and the experimental attitude and experiential understanding of materials that emerge in the explorative process, and it is also an opportunity to create a co-creation between the material developer and the designer that transcends their respective epistemological positions.
