Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic popularized telework, revolutionizing work styles and offering benefits like efficiency and reduced commute times, yet diminishing informal communication (IC) in workplaces. IC is vital for establishing weak ties, enhancing relationships, collaboration, and creativity. Limited research on IC's facilitators and barriers in Japanese offices led to this study, which utilized surveys and observations to analyze IC dynamics, particularly in smoking areas. This insight helped develop the "Cigarette Communication Card" (CCC), a tool fostering IC in non-smoking environments. Tests showed CCC improved dialogue and job satisfaction in break rooms, aiming for broader corporate cultural change to naturally develop relationships without segregation, valuing IC across various settings.
