Increasing Excitement by Adding Additional Information to a Standard Game

Extended rules with psychological and strategic elements based on Othello

Abstract

This study examines rule expansion in Othello, focusing on psychological reinforcement and strategic rules. Using Processing and smartphone camera heart rate measurements, we found psychological elements increased tension and heart rate, while strategic expansions boosted unpredictability and concentration. A survey indicated heightened excitement, though results were not statistically significant (p=0.492). These findings suggest rule extensions could enhance player experience and inspire innovative game design, despite the lack of statistical significance.
