To avoid traffic jams and accidents, variable route guidance maps, displaying ever-changing traffic information, will be necessary. The purpose of the present study is to clarify conditions of design of the variable map style sign that uses half less number of LED than the current guidance map and can show the detour. Especially, form of elements and their colors were examined. The ANOVA using orthogonal array was conducted to decide design requirements considering conspicuousness of the route guidance map. The guideline indicates dimensional standard of roads, form and expression of the detour, expression of place-name, that of route-marks, that of one's place, that of verbal information and the colourway. This design index can solve an existing problem of cost about the variable map style sign and contribute for the design of universal map style sign in Japan.
