Abstract

This research aims to compare the character patterns of Kanbun kosode and character scattering patterns, which were popular in the early Edo period, and Hogozome-moyou, which are said to have been popular in the later period. In this paper, we considered each character pattern from two aspects: “composition-driven" and “action-driven". Based on the results, we discussed the role that these elements play in the transition of each character pattern. Through comparison, it was found that in the character patterns of Kanbun kosode and character scattering patterns from the early-mid Edo period, the characters harmonize with the picture pattern and the composition is dominant. Whereas in Hogozome-moyou of the mid-late Edo period, characters have the aspect of strongly “action-driven". From the above, this paper has stated that the keywords “composition-driven" and “action-driven" can serve as important indicators when discussing the state of characters in each pattern group called character patterns.
