Abstract

In this study, it is focused on the use of joss paper in annual events in the Chenghai area of Swatow City, Guangdong Province, China, aiming to clarify its characteristics from these practices. Three key aspects are identified: (1) demonstrating people's creativity through diverse rituals, (2) marking the year's divisions and exposing life rhythms, (3) enhancing community bonds and cohesion. The design and utilization of joss paper express respect for deities and ancestors, establishing living norms and social order within the community. In this process, people reconstruct joss paper to fit their lifestyle, creating unique living cultures in different regions. The clarification of the characteristics of joss paper plays a crucial role in promoting the reaffirmation and re-recognition of joss paper culture, which is deemed vital for the development of village autonomy and independence.
