Abstract
As one of agricultural character in Hokkaido, it is given that short growing period due to low tempera-ture and snowpack during long winter. In order to improve productivity in cold region, it is necessary that develop-ment of soil management technology during snow season. Now, soil-frost control, which is the technique for control-ling soil frost depth by adjusting the timing and duration of thick snowcover, is noted because it can affect soil prop-erty physically and biochemically such as aggregate de-struction and nitrous oxide emission. This article reviews that development and background of soil frost control tech-nology in Hokkaido and previous studies on soil properties through freeze-thaw. Based on that, it is discussed that cur-rent situation and prospective research of soil management during snow season in Hokkaido.
