Abstract
We interviewed 105 out-patients at stoma clinics with urinary stomas regarding their sexual ability and activity at least 1 year after surgical treatment. All cases had a sexual partner. Informed consent was obtained for this study. We studied a total of 103 patient(80 males and 23 females)who ranged in age from 30 to 89 tears. The average age of males was 62.3 and 65.8 for the females. Within 6 months before surgical treatment 98% males and 82.6% of the males were involved in sexual activity, but 91.3% of males and 82.6% of females were not involved sexual activity following surgery. Loss of sexual desire was recorded by 98.9% of the females. Impotence was reported by 88.8% of males. Lack of orgasm was reported by 78.3% of the females. Overall sexual ability and activity were reduced in 90.0% of the urostomy patients, but some sexual desire remained.
These results indicate that pre-operative assessment and lpng term sexual counseling for urostomy patient are very important.
