Energy loss from temporary loop ileostomy in four patients with ulcerative colitis who underwent total colectomy and temporary loop ileostomy

Abstract
This study was conducted to investigate the postoperative nutritional and dietary state,in order to evaluate the loss of energy from temporary loop ileostomy.ln four patients with ulcerative colitis who underwent total colectomy and had a temporary loop ileostomy,the following items were investigated in connection with stoma care and dietary advice at the four time points measured;1)Body composition;2)fecal-sugar level;3)dietary intake;4)required energy;and 5)interview related to eating or drinking.The fecal-sugar level following a loop ileostomy was higher(median 288 mg/DL,range 167~423 mg/DL)than after an end ileostomy(median 58 mg/DL,range 45~70 mg/DL),and loss of energy was supposed.lt was thought that the patients in whom body composition was maintaines obtained the dietary energy equivalent to loss from the loop ileostomy.
