Abstract
The relationship between imperialism and colonialism in social work is the basis for this study. To explore it, a view of colonial social work of Japanese and Korean researchers is considered necessary. This study presents the ideas of two Japanese researchers, Namae Takayuki and Unno Koutoku and one Korean researcher, Kim Heemyeng. Their ideas of Korean social work can be summarized as follows : 1. Namae's point of view about colonial social work was based on humanism, but he did not oppose imperialism. For example, he had pursued relief for colonial people through the management of an agency for Korean narcotic addicts. But, he emphasized utmost respect for the Emperor of Japan in social work. 2. Unno had rigidly accepted imperialism, his ideas of "national health" were based on a program of national eugenics that was exceedingly radical and nationalistic. The possibility that the national health of all Korean people was carefully tested is extremely doubtful as it had nothing to do with the colony. 3. Kim's view is the clearest of all. Kim, as a Korean-born, criticized Japanese imperialism without reservation. He thought that the poverty of the Korean people resulted from the Japanese annexation of Korea. There were no Japanese researchers at that time like Kim. It is the difference between Japanese researchers and Kim.
