Abstract
The current study examined factors associated with social activities among the elderly. Data of the elderly were obtained from a mail survey in an urban area in Chiba Prefecture. Four aspects of Social activities were measured by four aspects: personal activities, socially-related activities, learning activities, and job activity. Multivariate analyses revealed that new residents (less than 5 years) were negatively associated with socially-related activities. The attitude toward community, sense of collecting information about social activities, and number of friends were positively related to social activity aspects. Experience in community activities was associated with the sense of collecting information about social activities and with the number of friends. The findings suggest that enhancement of social network and a spirit of community consciousness of the aged could contribute to the promotion of social activities among the elderly.
