Abstract

This study examined the process of foster parents raising a child who has a relationship with the biological parents. Data from five cases were collected through interviews with foster parents. These data were analyzed through a modified grounded theory approach (M-GTA), using a structure-construction qualitative research method (SCQRM) as a meta research method. A model was constructed of foster parents’ experience process in raising a child who has meetings with the biological parents. The model consisted of 6 categories and 13 concepts.

Results showed that foster parents, while feeling “burden and dissatisfaction with meetings with a foster child and the biological parents,” are experiencing a cyclic process that presents “ingenuity of involvement in the foster child’s conflict” and “support for the relationship between the biological parent and the foster child.” Also suggested was that foster parents experienced “changes in perception of biological parents” while being sustained by a “foundation to support exchange with the foster child and the biological parents.” Furthermore, they are going to feel the “maturity of the relationship between the foster parents and the foster child,” and they are going to be able to raise foster child confidently.
