Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to examine the influence of vehicles on cyclist gaze behavior. Driving experiment with eye mark recorder was carried out on the following; a road shoulder 1 meter wide, bicycle lane 1.85 meters, and bicycle lane 2.2 meters. Results show that cyclist gaze behavior varies depending on the bicycle environment. First, a time and the number of times, which research participants gaze at road shoulder, increases as the number of vehicles overtook bicycle increases on the road shoulder 1 meter wide. It is considered that cyclist often determine if they pedal a bicycle on the inside of the road shoulder due to narrow width. Second, saccade is likely to occur as the number of vehicles overtook bicycle increases on the bicycle lane 1.85 meters. Third, vehicles does not have an influence on cyclist gaze behavior on bicycle lane 2.2 meters. These result show that the effect of implement of bicycle lane and width of bicycle environment.
