In Japan, arterial roads are not clearly divided into levels, and stores are located facing the arterial road, resulting in many pedestrians and bicyclists crossings at flat intersections, causing traffic accidents and congestion, which are still social problems. A new type of intersection called Alternative Intersections has been introduced in foreign countries to reduce the number of intersections between vehicles, and it has been reported to improve the safety and efficiency of intersections. This study focused on the RCUT control method among Alternative Intersections and compared the crossing types of current intersections and RCUT control methods using simulation. The results of the analysis revealed that the application of RCUT to flat intersections in Japan improves the efficiency of arterial roads, and that pedestrians and bicycles can pass safely and efficiently if the crossing type is considered according to conditions, thus demonstrating the effectiveness of RCUT.
