Abstract

After acute stroke, early rehabilitation is extremely important to attain maximal functional recovery. It is also one of the important themes to estimate their convalescence. We examined the relationship between FIM and prognosis. We treated 208 stroke patients (excluding subarachnoid hemorrhage) at our institution between 4-2005 and 3-2006. We examined 123 patients whose motor FIM 2 weeks post stroke was less than 80. We classified them into high recovery group whose motor FIM score was above 15 (30 patients) and low recovery group with FIM less than 14 (53 patients). We compared the motor FIM, cognitive FIM, home return rate, gait acquisition rate and hospitalization days between them. The hospitalization days and 2 weeks post stroke motor FIM were the same however cognitive FIM was higher in high recovery group. High cognitive FIM seems to predict better prognosis for high ADL ability and gait afterwards.
