Abstract
This study examined the clinical features of 27 acute stroke patients with pulmonary embolism (PE). The primary diagnosis was cerebral infarction (CI) in 12 (0.25%) patients, cerebral hemorrhage (ICH) in 12 (0.94%) and subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) in 3 (0.59%). The mortality was 3 (25%), 3 (25%), 1 (33%), respectively. The median (quartile) of National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale was 13.0 (10.0–21.5) in CI, 17.5 (16.0–23.3) in ICH at admission, and the value was comparatively high but varied widely. The onset median time was from 8 to 13.5 days. PE was prone to occur in cases with severe motor paresis in CI and ICH. The activities of daily living was bedridden state in 77.8%. Compared to previous reports, the incidence rate of PE remained nearly the same. PE occurred in CI more than others because CI has difficulty in using anti-thrombotic agents. The mortality rate in PE is still high, so we need to consider the prophylaxis from early phase.
