Abstract
We studied 3 patients with basal forebrain amnesia, who had severe anterograde and retrograde amnesia, confabulation including personality changes, disorientation and denial of illness. Patient 1, with a lesion restricted to the basal forebrain, had a mild personality change and normal executive function. The other two patients had basal forebrain lesions which spread to the frontal lobes, and showed moderate to severe impairments of executive function as well as personality changes with euphoria and restlessness. Rehabilitation for amnesia, using memory note, was effective for establishing routine activity. Although amnesia persisted for more than a year, the patients had little difficulty in their daily lives after discharge to home.
