Abstract
A three-phase fluidized bed was employed for a process of biological treatment of phenolic wastewater. In the experiments for characteristics of biological treatment, the activated carbon BAC and cement ball (CB ball) were used as media.
Effects of biofilm surface area or biofilm volume on phenolic removal rate were studied. The experiments were carried out in the condition that phenol was detected in effluent water, because net phonolic removal rate should be evaluated. Within the range of this experiment, phenolic removal depended on biofilm surface area more than biofilm volume.
The characteristics of biological treatment of phenolic wastewater were evaluated according to this result. Total phenolic removal rate was directly proportional to total biofilm surface area in the bed. Phenolic removal was apparently approximate to zero-order reaction in this experiment. There was no significant difference in the effects of media on the phenolic removal rate.
Response to shock load of inlet phenol concentration was studied. Media which have a property of adsorption such as activated carbon produce a buffer effect on shock load for a short time. But they have no effect on shock load for a long time.
