Abstract
Adsorption and biodegradation characteristics of musty odorous compounds, 2-methylisoborneol (MIB) and geosmin were examined using activated carbon and non-adsorbing cellulose material as biofilm carriers. Pseudomonas sp. capable of MIB degradation was used as a biofilm-forming bacterium for the carriers. In the isotherm tests for MIB and geosmin, MIB was efficiently removed by two types of carbon, and the carbon with wider surface area showed higher removal efficiency. However, there was no removal efficiency in the two types of cellulose with different pore size of 100 μm and 1000 μm. In the removal effects of MIB by carbon and cellulose carriers with Pseudomonas sp., the carbon formed biofilm viz. biological activated carbon (BAC) could highly degrade MIB by 92.7%, while cellulose-carrier showed MIB removal with 87.7% within 168 hrs, comparing with obvious less removal of 55.7% by the planktonic degrader in water solution. It was found that Pseudomonas sp. aggregated on the carrier could considerably enhance MIB degradation whether the biofilm carrier was adsorption or not.
