The Japanese government has set national targets to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 46% by 2030 and to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. In the domestic wastewater treatment sector, various initiatives have been undertaken to contribute to these national mitigation goals. Efforts to reduce GHG emissions from this sector have progressed to a stage where practical implementation can be expected, supported by the establishment of reliable measurement and evaluation methodologies and by an improved understanding of emission mechanisms. This report provides an overview of presentations delivered by researchers who are addressing GHG emissions and mitigation in the domestic wastewater treatment sector from diverse perspectives.
