KF streptococcus agar using membrane filtertechnique (designated as the KF·MF technique) was examined for the validity of the detection of enterococci in environmental water. The percentage of verified enterococci among enterococci-like colonies isolated from the river water was in the range of 95-100, and that from the brackish water wasless than 60, but that from the sea water was almost none. Thus, we suggest that KF streptococcus agar is not suitable for the detection of enterococci in sea water.
