In spite of the fact that the characteristics (gloss, smoothness, printability and etc.) of coated papers are affected by the orientation of clays coated on papers, the literature which deals with such a problem is scanty.
In this paper, the investigation has been carried out by taking the X-ray diffraction diagrams of the clay layers which are overlapped and are put in parallel with the direction of X-ray. Specimens are clay-contained films, handcoated papers (non-supercalendered and supercalendered) and commercial coated papers. It is certain that the clays coated on papers orientate in the state of “uniplanar orientation”.
Furthermore, the relationships between the shape and orientation of clays have been examined by considering the electron micrographs of them.
