Abstract
Graft copolymerization of acrylamide onto polyvinyl alcohol fibers was carried out by the ceric ion method. Using the acrylamide grafted polyvinyl alcohol fibers of various degree of grafting, synthtic fiber papers were prepared and following results were obtained.
1) The synthetic fiber papers could be manufactured from the acrylamide grafted polyvinyl alcohol fiber by neither beating nor addition of binder.
2) The grafted polyvinyl alcohol fiber papers was separated easily in water and turned into fiberous state.
3) The strength of this paper showed maximum value at the degree of grafting about 35%.
4) The degree of grafting was found to increase with raising value of monomer concentration and to have optimum for HNO3 concentration, initiator concentration and reaction temperature. In air, the degree of grafting was affected by stirring, but not in nitroge gas.
