Abstract
For years, the instrumentation in process industries including Pulp and Paper industry has been standardized with so called Distributed Control System (DCS). CDS was first introduced in mid 70's with distributed digital process controller, CRT-based Human Interface and a digital communication. It also introduced a well-designed engineering package to mimic the conventional analog instrumentation. After several generations, the DCS is now dynamically moving toward the completely new system architecture with open network, open software, new software technology, control technology and engineering technology. At the same time, traditional instrumentation engineers needs to prepare to respond to the new control system objectives and new technologies, methodology. This paper summarized the new trend in control system and discusses on changing demands to the instrumentation engineers.
