Effects of Inhalation Anesthetics on Cellular Immunity in dogs

Abstract

Immunosuppressive effects after inhalation anesthesia (halothane, isoflurane and sevoflurane) in dogs were investigated through the change in immunological activity of macrophages and peripheral blood lymphocytes (PBL) by chemiluminescence (CL) and lymphoblastogenesis, respectively.
In halothane group, the reduction of blastogenetic response of PBL was observed from the first to the second week after anesthesia. On the other hand, in isoflurane group, the reduction was observed immediately from the first to the second day after anesthesia. In sevoflurane group, the change of blastogenetic response of PBL was minimal. In all the anesthesia, the change of radical production of macrophage was minimal.
These results suggest that immunosuppressive effects in dogs after anesthesia differ depending of the anesthetic agent.
