Effect of 7.2% Hypertonic Saline Solution on Two Calves with Hypoxemia

Abstract

Two Holstein calves (6 weeks old) with mild hypoxemia (PaO₂ : 83.2 and 74.8 mmHg, respectively) caused from mild pneumonia were treated with an infusion of 7.2 % hypertonic saline solution (HSS : 2400 mOsmol/kg⋅H₂O) . HSS infusion induced a progressive increase in PaO₂ to the levels of 95.3 and 89.4 mmHg, respectively, at 15 min after the administration, showing the improvement of hypoxemia. The HSS infusion also produced a transient increase in cardiac output (CO : 141.2 and 127.1%, respectively), however the effect of HSS on the cardiac function was limited within 60 min.
