Economic Loss from Outbreak of Salmonella Typhimurium in Fatling Pigs

Abstract

From June to July, 1992, outbreak of Salmonella Typhimurium in fatling pigs occurred in the farm in Chiba Prefecture, Japan. The cost of economic loss from swine Salmonella outbreak in the present farm was analysed. The cost of total economic losses was \3, 352, 945. Total economic loss was divided into two factors: (i) direct output losses for Salmonella infected pigs; (ii) secondary loss for veterinary medical treatments or preventions in infected animals. The former was \1, 842, 484 and the latter, \1, 510, 461. Direct output losses; dead animals, prolongation of fatling period of pigs, decreasing of growth weight of pigs and the depreciating price were \630, 513, \854, 515, \293, 148 and \64, 308, respectively. About half of direct losses was occurred by the prolongation fatling period of pigs. Secondary loss; costs for medicines, veterinary medical treatment and diagnosis were \766, 145, \167, 726 and \576, 590, respectively. Present results indicate that Salmonella infection in fatling pigs produce serial economic losses.
