Abstract
Recent rapid development of information technology has made Geographic Information System (GIS), that is capable of integrating, processing and analyzing geographic information, a useful and practical tool for scientists and policy makers in their scientific analyses and decision making tasks. This paper briefly summarizes the basic concept and history of GIS as well as its characteristics. The two most important functions of GIS, i.e. spatial search and spatial analysis, are also described with an example. Some examples on potential applications in veterinary sciences are included for better understanding of GIS for veterinary Scientists.
