Abstract
In order to reduce the fuel consumption and the exhaust gas emissions it is necessary to investigate the diesel combustion process more deeply. In the diesel engines the fuel is injected into the combustion chamber with high pressure and high temperature as a spray. Then, the fuel spray is vaporized, self-ignited and developed as a turbulent diffusion flame.
Color schlieren method is useful for photographic observation of fuel spray combustion to separate into unvaporized fuel, vaporized fuel, combustion flame and turbulent air.
The paper shows the relation between spray combustion and air turbulence from high speed color schlieren photographs, for which the special test engine was used.
