Abstract
Soft X-ray appearance potential spectrometer has been constructed for surface studies. The powder sample was put into a cage-type holder consisting of the stainless steel mesh. The resolution and sensitivity of the spectrometer were tested experimentally.
The appearance potential spectra were obtained for V, VCl3, VOCl2 V2O2, Ni, NiO and Ni2O3. As regards vanadium compound, the shift of V-L3 binding energy of VCl3 and V2O5 were 1.2 eV and 1.6 eV, respectively. On the other hand, the energy shift of VOCl2 has hardly been observed. In the case of nickel oxides, NiO and Ni2O3 produce the shift of 0.4 eV and 0.5 eV, respectively. It is a characteristic that the smaller the atomic number is, the larger the shift value of binding energy of L3-level becomes.
