Abstract
In spite of a long history of the research and development activity concerning wide-gap compound semiconductors such as ZnSe and ZnS, useful devices have not yet appeared. In this article, we describe recent results of our study on ZnSe/ZnS strained layer superlattices. We first overview the current stage of understanding, then search for different applications of these materials other than the conventional p-n junction devices. Topics include MOCVD growth of the material, its application to optical waveguides and optical modulators, and a proposal of second harmonic generation devices.
