Abstract
Dual Flow Deflector casing for cross-flow wind turbine was proposed to get higher performance of the wind turbine. This casing is composed of two flow deflector plates. For cross-flow wind turbine, it has an undesirable part of swept area where the blades travel in the opposite direction to the wind, so the wind slows down the turbine rotor rotation. Therefore one of the two flow deflector plates is located in front of this part of swept area to block the wind from entering. And another flow deflector plate with some angle of attack is located nearby where the blades travel in the same direction of the wind. This plate generates accelerated flow to assist the rotation of the turbine rotor. In this study, 2D numerical flow analyses of cross-flow wind turbine with Dual Flow Deflector casing were carried out, by using OpenFOAM (open source CFD software package). The results of the numerical analyses were evaluated by comparing the flow field and performance of the wind turbine with the experimental results.
