Abstract
Preservative treatment towards wood for preventing the degradation with fungi and termites is important, since extending the service life of wood which contributes the sustainable use of forest resources. However, when the treated wood with preservatives is used in an outdoor environment, there is a concern that the active ingredients of preservatives may be leached out into the environment. Therefore, as a safer wood preservative, a wood preservative “Miracle Laurel AZ” containing neonicotinoid compounds, azole compounds, organoiodine compounds, and quaternary ammonium compounds as active ingredients without containing heavy metals has been developed.
Several kinds of performance test regarding fungi and termites based on the JIS standards were carried out, and the developed preservative met the performance standards in all performed tests. In addition, a fish toxicity test was performed using treated wood by the Miracle Laurel AZ, copper based preservative and DDAC (didecyldimethylammonium chloride) type preservative. As a result, this preservative had lower fish toxicity than the conventional ones. This indicates that the use of this treated wood near the water environment or in the environment exposed to rainwater has less influences to the surrounding environment. Furthermore, the iron corrosion test of the treated wood based on the JIS standard met the performance standard, and that of the preservative itself also showed an anticorrosion effect.
