In order to refinish wooden benches made of Selangan batu wood that had been used outdoors for 7 years and 6 months in Fujisawa City (Kanagawa Prefecture), a cleaning process as a pretreatment for finishing using various commercially available cleaning agents and bleaches were carried out and examined the cleaning effect by them. The wooden benches, which had turned gray color due to outdoor use, showed a tendency to increase in lightness (L*) and chroma (C*) after cleaning, so the cleaning effect was evaluated using them. As a result, there were differences in the effect depending on the product, and chlorine-based wood bleach showed a high cleaning effect, and products containing both oxygen-based and chlorine-based bleach showing the highest cleaning effect in especially. On the other hand, even chlorine bleach products for household or kitchen use had a low wood cleaning effect because the dilution ratio when using them was high and the chlorine concentration was low. In addition, using only a detergent containing surfactants for wood did not provide sufficient cleaning results. As a result of the above, it is advisable to use bleaching agents for wood when cleaning wood that is to be used outdoors as a pretreatment before finishing.
