Abstract
In recent year, there has been a shortage of the bed-logs used for cultivation of Shiitake mushroom in many districts of Japan. In this paper, we discussed the changes of chemical components for saw-dust medium in Bamboo (Phyllostachys edulis Riv.) and Tabunoki (Machilus thunbergii S. et Z.) during the period of incubation, and the possibility for utilization as culture medium of Lentinus edodes of Bamboo sawdust.
The results obtained were as follows:
1) The pH of the medium declined at the first stage of cultivation, and then increased gradually reaching the range of 3.5-3.8. On the other hand, the weight-loss ratio of the medium proceeded vigorously at the first cultivation.
2) Sugar contents and alcohol-benzen extracts in the various medium declined rapidly at the beginning of cultivation while the hot-water extracts increased.
3) The chemical components of medium changed vigorously at 2-3 months of culture period. At the same time, the Shiitake mushrooms were formed, and then the growing of the Shiitake mushrooms became gradually.
4) When rice-bran was added to the culture-medium, the mycelium growth was noticeably accelerated.
5) The chemical components in the Bamboo culture medium changed with the same degree as that in the Tabunoki culture medium. From the above results, it is suggested that the Bamboo-saw-dust can be approved useful when the rice-bran is added to the medium.
6) A rate of the growth between the Shiitake fungus on the Bamboo and the Tabunoki are depended on the difference of the elements of tissues.
