Abstract
Diameter at breast height above the ground (DBH), stress-wave velocity (Vs) and Pilodyn penetration (Pp) were investigated in plus tree grafted clones (a total of 745 clones and 2149 individuals) of sugi (Cryptomeria japonica D.DON) which were 14 years old and planted in the Okubo Breeding Stock Garden at Hitachi. In order to evaluate the wood properties with a high degree of accuracy, all individuals were identified using genotyping. DBH, Vs and Pp were observed to be significantly different among clones. Means and coefficient of variation (CV) values were similar to those of the previous report of sugi plus tree clones. In the relationship between DBH, Vs and Pp, some significant relationships were observed; however, all values of correlation of coefficients were low. This result shows that it is possible to select the sugi which has both superior growth and wood properties. Vs and Pp were investigated for common clones between Okubo and 3 test sites and the correlation coefficients were calculated. Significant relationships were observed in Vs and Pp. Therefore, it is possible to select at an early stage of growth for Vs and Pp.
