Abstract
It is desirable to control welding distortion , the procedure should be applied at the same time with welding rather than before or after welding for reduction in cost. The method suggested in this paper is to cool the hot section of weld metal during welding, in order to control rotational distortion. Root gap behavior during in-process welding by additional cooling is numerically analyzed by the three-dimensional thermal elastic-plastic analysis and experimentally investigated. In the result, under the proper condition in additional cooling, rotational distortion is expected to control without any tacking or restraint.
