The First Specimen of Rufous-bellied Woodpecker Dendrocopos hyperythrus Collected from Japan

Abstract

In May 2005, the first photos of the Rufous-bellied Woodpecker Dendrocopos hyperythrus in Japan were taken at Hegura-jima (Ishikawa). On 2 May 2007, a dead adult male of this species was collected at the Echizenhama (Nishikanku, Niigata). This is the first specimen collected from Japan.
