Abstract

Facility horticulture has high productivity, more profitable than rice or field crops. Without soil, Hydroponic cultivation systems can easily control root-zone environments, which leads to high quality productions. The authors developed a prototype of a simple, space-saving liquid-filled hydroponic cultivation system using polyvinyl chloride(PVC) pipes. System operation was checked through cultivation tests with Japanese mustard spinach. The results revealed the following facts: (1) prototype system was able to operate continuously 24 hours a day for approximately 50 to 60 days during the summer and fall seasons; (2) Japanese mustard spinach grown in the system maintained a standard size although the mortality rate may differ depending on the growing season.
