Abstract

As Typhoon 201821 directly attacked Osaka Bay area, Kansai International Airport also had huge damage and operation paralysis due to inundation. In order to prevent causing same damage and with considering the characteristics of this artificial island which has airport operation function, this study quantitatively evaluates four causing factors including wave overtopping. As a result, we found that main causing factor of inundation should be wave overtopping from both East and South side of 1st island and its amount was about 2.25 million m3. In addition, especially when typhoon was passing through Osaka Bay, unexpected high wave which were caused by strong wind from South or South-Southwest side of opposite shore. Therefore, wave overtopping occurred from east side revetment wall and this made damage due to inundation more seriously.
