Abstract

Although multiple risk factors such as tsunami and storm surge has been existing in coastal area, each hazard map, which is one of the soft countermeasures, shows only one disaster. The integrated frequency of inundations in the area must be important for residents in coastal area. This study conducted a case study of integrated risk assessment for the coast of Ibaraki prefecture in Japan based on the probabilistic flood assessment due to tsunami and storm surge.

The main results of this study are that the area in which people death occurred was expanded due to the integration of the risks, over all return periods. As damages and casualities are caused by even storm surges of which frequency is high, especially in low-lying areas along the coast of Ibaraki prefecture in Japan, a risk map integrated tsunami and storm surges shows higher critical situation than a risk map of tsunami alone. Therefore, we can say that integrated risk assessment which combines the risks of tsunami and storm surge is effective.
